ISO 27001 readiness quiz

Fourteen questions across the requirement clauses 4 to 10, one at a time, to show which part of the management system is furthest behind.

ISO 27001 readiness quiz

Fourteen questions across the ISO/IEC 27001:2022 requirement clauses 4 to 10.

Answer as your organisation is today, not as you intend it to be. Scoring is indicative — a self-assessment to show where to look next, not a certification assessment.

Clause 4 — Context

Have you written down the internal and external issues that affect your information security, and who your interested parties are?

4.1 Understanding the organisation and its context

Is the scope of your ISMS defined and documented — the sites, people, systems and services it covers, and what it excludes?

4.3 Determining the scope of the ISMS

Clause 5 — Leadership

Is there an information security policy, approved by top management and communicated to everyone who needs it?

5.2 Information Security Policy

Are information security roles, responsibilities and authorities assigned to named people rather than to "the business"?

5.3 Organisational roles, responsibilities and authorities

Clause 6 — Planning

Do you have a repeatable information security risk assessment and treatment process, with an owner recorded for each risk?

6.1 Actions to address risks and opportunities

Have you set measurable information security objectives, with plans saying what will be done, by whom and by when?

6.2 Information security objectives and planning to achieve them

Clause 7 — Support

Can you show that the people doing security work are competent — and keep evidence of their training or experience?

7.2 Competence

Is your documented information controlled — current versions, approvals, and people able to find the right copy?

7.5 Documented information

Clause 8 — Operation

Do you run risk assessments at planned intervals (and after significant change), and keep the results?

8.2 Information security risk assessment

Do you have a risk treatment plan and a Statement of Applicability, signed off by the risk owners?

8.3 Information security risk treatment

Clause 9 — Performance evaluation

Is there an internal audit programme that covers the ISMS, run by people independent of the work they audit?

9.2 Internal audit

Does top management review the ISMS at planned intervals, with the outputs and decisions recorded?

9.3 Management review

Clause 10 — Improvement

Are nonconformities and incidents logged, with root cause analysis and corrective actions tracked to closure?

10.2 Nonconformity and corrective action

Can you point to changes you made in the last year because the ISMS told you to — improvements, not just fixes?

10.1 Continual improvement

    Information security risk calculator

Score a risk on an example likelihood and impact scale, pick a treatment option, and build a starter risk register you can export.

    Information security risk calculator

Score a risk on an example 5 × 5 scale, choose a treatment option and build a starter risk register.

Score one risk at a time, then add it to the register. The 5 × 5 scale below is an example. ISO/IEC 27001 expects you to define your own risk criteria — the wording of the levels, the bands and what each band obliges you to do are organisation-defined.

    Likelihood × impact

    9

    Medium

Example bands: Low from 1, Medium from 5, High from 10, Critical from 15. Set your own.

    The four risk treatment options

    Modify
Reduce the risk by applying controls — the option most Annex A controls serve.
    Avoid
Stop or do not start the activity that creates the risk.
    Transfer
Share the risk with a third party, for example insurance or a contractual allocation.
    Accept
Knowingly retain the risk, within your risk appetite and signed off by the risk owner.

Whichever option you choose, ISO 27001 expects the decision to be recorded, owned and justified — and the controls you rely on to be reflected in your Statement of Applicability.

A real risk register keeps owners, treatment decisions and evidence together — and feeds your Statement of Applicability.

A Statement of Applicability is more than this list: it records every control you need to treat your risks, why each one is included, whether it is implemented, and your justification for any Annex A control you leave out. This export gives you the control column — the reasoning is yours.

Turning 93 controls into an evidenced Statement of Applicability is the slow part. See it pre-built.

    2013 to 2022 transition checker

The 11 controls introduced in the 2022 revision, one at a time as in place, partly or not yet, ending in your gap list.

    2013 to 2022 transition checker

    The 11 controls introduced in ISO/IEC 27001:2022, as a have-it / partly / not-yet checklist.

ISO/IEC 27001:2022 brought 11 new Annex A controls. The transition period for certificates issued against the 2013 revision ended on 31 October 2025, so these are now part of a normal certification — not a future project. Mark where you stand on each.

    5.7 Threat Intelligence

Collect and analyse information about threats to your organisation, and turn it into action — strategic intelligence on the threat landscape and attacker types, reviewed periodically.

5.23 Information Security for Use of Cloud Services

Define security requirements, roles and provider selection criteria for cloud services, allocate controls between you and the provider, agree incident handling, and hold a documented exit strategy.

5.30 ICT Readiness for Business Continuity

Identify the activities ICT must keep running, plan structured responses based on a business impact analysis, and test and update those plans so ICT is ready for disruption.

    7.4 Physical Security Monitoring

Identify restricted areas and monitor them continuously with suitable tools (CCTV, alarms, access control), within data protection law.

    8.9 Configuration Management

Hold documented policies and standard, secure configurations for hardware, software, services and networks; monitor for drift and assign ownership for keeping them right.

    8.10 Information Deletion

Delete information you no longer need, using deletion methods appropriate to the medium, documenting what was deleted and covering third parties who hold data for you.

    8.11 Data Masking

Mask sensitive data in line with access control and legal requirements, using techniques such as pseudonymisation, anonymisation and encryption.

    8.12 Data Leakage Prevention

Apply classification, monitoring, encryption and access restrictions to systems and networks that process sensitive data, so information cannot leave unnoticed.

    8.16 Monitoring Activities

Monitor networks, systems and applications for anomalous behaviour both proactively and reactively, with tooling that feeds incident response.

    8.23 Web Filtering

Manage access to external websites — block known-malicious and inappropriate sites, define access rules, and train staff on safe web use.

    8.28 Secure Coding

Apply secure coding principles across development: secure design and coding standards, review of code as it is written, and checks before and after release.

    Your gap list

Nothing marked as a gap yet — answer the questions above.

The other changes in the 2022 revision are structural: the same 93 controls regrouped into four themes with attributes, and the requirement clauses 4–10 tightened rather than rewritten. A transition is mostly evidence work — showing that each new control is either implemented or justified as out of scope in your Statement of Applicability.

Mapping the new controls onto what you already run is the whole job. See how the platform tracks it.

      Security awareness quiz

Ten everyday scenarios, each with the reasoning behind the best answer, for an awareness session rather than an exam.

      Security awareness quiz

Ten everyday scenarios, with the reasoning behind each best answer.

Ten situations that come up in ordinary working weeks. Pick what you would actually do; the explanation for each one appears with your score.

1 An email that looks like it is from your CEO asks you to buy gift cards for a client, urgently, and to keep it quiet until the deal closes. What do you do?

      Phishing

2 Your phone buzzes with a multi-factor approval prompt you did not trigger. It keeps buzzing. What is the right move?

      MFA and passwords

3 You clicked a link in a suspicious email and entered your password before realising. Nothing obvious has happened. What now?

      Reporting incidents

4 You are leaving your desk in a shared office for a twenty-minute meeting. Papers with customer details are open in front of you.

      Clear desk and clear screen

5 Someone carrying a large box is behind you at a badge-controlled door and asks you to hold it open.

      Tailgating

6 You find an unlabelled USB stick in the car park. What should you do with it?

      Removable media

7 You are working from a café and need to open customer records. The network list shows an open "Cafe Free WiFi" and a similarly named one.

      Public Wi-Fi

8 A caller says they are from your IT supplier, already knows your name and your manager’s name, and needs your login to "finish a migration tonight".

      Social engineering

9 A colleague asks you to send a spreadsheet of customer records to their personal email address so they can work on it at the weekend.

      Data handling

10 Your laptop has been asking for a security update for a week and you keep postponing it because you are busy.

      Why

Nothing you choose here leaves the page, and no score is recorded. Use it as a conversation starter for an awareness session rather than as a test of individuals.

Awareness only counts when you can show who was trained, on what, and when.
